Senior Day for Purdue Basketball

March 08, 2016 by matt thomas

I'm going to start off with a short story that led me to what I tried to achieve at Purdue's Senior Night on Sunday.

A little over a year ago, I traveled with Andy Hancock to South Bend to help him cover the Virginia vs. Notre Dame ACC matchup. We set up about five remote cameras throughout the arena. But, the one that at the time I could most easily replicate, a common floor remote, stuck with me. I applied it at the following Purdue game, tweeting at Andy and thanking him for the advice. His response, short and concise, offered to lend me some gear the next time I needed it.

Then came Sunday.

I knew I wanted to go big. With the help of Nikon's Professional Service, Andy and the guys at Robert's Camera, I was excited to see what I could come up with. It was going to be my last basketball game of the season. Purdue still has the Big Ten Tournament, and potentially the NCAA tournament left ahead of them, but this was it for me. I entered with six camera bodies, setting up three different remotes. In my haste to set up my final remote, up in Mackey's catwalk, I bumped the focus ring without realizing it. An entire game's worth of photos, out of focus. You live and you learn though. I'm still proud of the photos I made on Sunday.
